A field of nearly 2,000 aspiring soccer players who registered for the Sueno MLS program has been trimmed to 18 regional finalists who will participate in three days of drills at the Home Depot Center this week in hopes of winning a chance at a professional contract.

Fifteen field players and three goalkeepers make up the final field, and the winner of the national reality-show competition will be announced Sunday on the Univision sports entertainment show Republica Deportiva.

April 20, 2012 Rowan Fiscal Court will advertise for bids on the new animal shelter as soon as plans are approved by the state.

Magistrates on Tuesday approved for Judge-Executive Jim Nickell to seek bids on the project after the approval.

The county spent an extra $300 to have the plans “fast tracked” at the Division of Construction in Frankfort.

Nickell said the plans should be approved within about 10 days of Tuesday’s regular fiscal court meeting.

Officials are up against a June 1 deadline to spend a $150,000 grant to build a new shelter.

High winds forced flames through a barn in Jackson Township Monday afternoon.

The barn at 8505 W. CR 592 was owned by Todd Bowers, said Bob Dible, chief of Kansas Fire Department. The fire was reported around 12:15 pm Monday.

It is an older large barn, he said. They used to house animals in there.

Dible said he did not know the fires cause or where it started in the barn. He also did not have a damage estimate but said the barn was a loss. The building contained a boat and woodworking equipment, he said.

Its all destroyed, he said.
